  1. In geology, a very large basin-shaped crater.
  2. Calderas are found at the tops of volcanoes,
  3. where the original peak has collapsed into an
  4. empty chamber beneath. The basin, many times
  5. larger than the original volcanic vent, may
  6. be flooded, producing a crater lake, or the
  7. flat floor may contain a number of small
  8. volcanic cones, produced by volcanic activity
  9. after the collapse. Typical calderas are
  10. Kilauea, Hawaii; Crater Lake, Oregon, USA;
  11. and the summit of Olympus Mons, on Mars. Some
  12. calderas are wrongly referred to as craters,
  13. such as Ngorongoro, Tanzania.
